Bring People to Christ through Music

Hello Family and Friends,

Wow, it is Monday. This week like most weeks is a blur. ( Mom’s note: She must be doing so well learning Japanese because her English is getting worse!)  I am just going to say right now that I have been very bad at keeping up my journal. I am about a transfer and a half behind. We are just so busy with all our investigators, I don’t know how people have time to sit down and write! Luckily, I keep a fantastic planner so I can usually remember what happened!

First of all, I was called and invited to go to the District Leader/ Selected Sister Conference on Saturday. There I learned so much about how to use time more wisely and really help the ward I am living in. I have a game plan and we will see even more great things!

This week we had a Music Night during our English Conversation Class, it was a great opportunity for the students to meet members and have a fun time.

During our Ping Pong night on Saturday, my companion and I were able to sit down with our friend who is 9 and sing songs with her. I love the hymns because the words teach simple truths. We sang I am a Child of God, Lord Dismiss us With Thy Blessings, Silent Night, and Joy to the World. The Hymns may seem kind of random, but besides the first one, most Japanese people know the tunes to those hymns. It was a fun experience and it left her with the feeling that she wants to come to Primary!

This week during Study time I was reading the preface of the Hymn Book. Has anyone every taken the time to read it?

Here is a part of the Preface from the First Presidency that I like.

Inspirational music is an essential part of our church meetings. The hymns invite the Spirit of the Lord, create a feeling of reverence, unify us as members, and provide a way for us to offer praises to the Lord.

Some of the greatest sermons are preached by the singing of hymns. Hymns move us to repentance and good works, build testimony and faith, comfort the weary, console the mourning, and inspire us to endure to the end.

Brothers and sisters, let us use the hymns to invite the Spirit of the Lord into our congregations, our homes, and our personal lives. Let us memorize and ponder them, recite and sing them, and partake of their spiritual nourishment. Know that the song of the righteous is a prayer unto our Father in Heaven, “and it shall be answered with a blessing upon [your] heads.”

Hymns are inspiring they really do help in times of need. There are many times on my mission when I have praying and desiring an answer to my questions. Many times my answers have come through the lyrics of hymns that I’ve know since childhood. I encourage everyone to learn a new hymn this week. Here is a hymn that I have come to love in the past couple weeks.

1. Master, the tempest is raging!

The billows are tossing high!

The sky is o’ershadowed with blackness.

No shelter or help is nigh.

Carest thou not that we perish?

How canst thou lie asleep

When each moment so madly is threat’ning

A grave in the angry deep?

(Chorus)

The winds and the waves shall obey thy will:

Peace, be still.

Whether the wrath of the storm-tossed sea

Or demons or men or whatever it be,

No waters can swallow the ship where lies

The Master of ocean and earth and skies.

They all shall sweetly obey thy will:

Peace, be still; peace, be still.

They all shall sweetly obey thy will:

Peace, peace, be still.

2. Master, with anguish of spirit

I bow in my grief today.

The depths of my sad heart are troubled.

Oh, waken and save, I pray!

Torrents of sin and of anguish

Sweep o’er my sinking soul,

And I perish! I perish! dear Master.

Oh, hasten and take control!

3. Master, the terror is over.

The elements sweetly rest.

Earth’s sun in the calm lake is mirrored,

And heaven’s within my breast.

Linger, O blessed Redeemer!

Leave me alone no more,

And with joy I shall make the blest harbor

And rest on the blissful shore.
